Elon Musk is reportedly stepping down from his role in US government ‘soon’.
President Donald Trump is allegedly ‘pleased’ with the Tesla CEO’s work so far as the head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) but he expects him to be ‘stepping down in the coming weeks’.
The billionaire previously told Fox News in an interview that he could cut $1 trillion of the government budget in just 130 days – meaning around the end of May 2025.
His role as ‘special government employee’ means he is only allowed to work for the government for 130 days – so DOGE is scheduled to be wrapped up on 4 July 2026 unless extended.
Politico also reported that Trump had told members of his team that the SpaceX CEO will be stepping down in the upcoming weeks to return his attention to his many businesses.
‘Three Trump insiders’ shared that he will remain as a supporting role but will not be a permanent part of the government team moving forward.
On 31 March, Trump said; ‘at some point, Elon’s going to want to go back to his company’ and that if ‘he wants to, i’d keep him as long as i could keep him.’
A spokesperson for the White House shared on 1 April: “As the President said, this White House would love to keep Elon around for as long as possible. Elon has been instrumental in executing the President’s agenda, and will continue this good work until the President says otherwise.”
